Mary Whitlock Fennell Disher was born Mary Whitlock Fennell on August 7, 1911 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. Her parents were Lee Arthur Fennell and Mary M. A. Fennell. Mary Whitlock Fennell graduated from Redland High School in Redland, Florida in June 1928. She entered the University of Kentucky in February of 1930, where she used the name Whitlock Fennell.
